Earth Alert: Researching for way to save the world from 'Armageddon asteroids'

Scientists in the United States and Europe are working on ways to save us from asteroids that may lie on collision course with planet Earth.
Experts from NASA and the European Space Agency are looking at ways to change the paths of two asteroids - Didymos and Didymoon.
"An asteroid is very large - almost the size of a mountain - and if we hit it with a spacecraft, we only make a tiny change in the velocity. But over time that's the difference between hitting Earth and not hitting Earth," said Andy Cheng, lead investigator for the Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment (AIDA) study at NASA.
The cosmic masses are not heading our way for another couple of centuries, but the scientists say it is a "very important" mission.
"We want to have the capability to do this as soon as possible because we know these things are out there. But to find all the things that are potential threats is a very big goal," Denton Ebel of the American Museum of Natural History said.
"This particular mission is to take the next step, which is something very important. What are you going to do about it if something actually has your name on it."
The project is still in its theoretical phase, awaiting approval for launch.

Oscar winner Jamie Foxx was a real-life action hero Monday night — reportedly rescuing a driver from a burning vehicle.

Foxx, 48, wasted no time when he heard a violent wreck outside his gate in the celebrity enclave of Hidden Valley northwest of Los Angeles, TMZ.com reported.

Actor Jamie Foxx reportedly rescued a driver from a burning car and called 911 near his California home Monday night.

The actor ran to the scene and saw the driver in distress inside the flipped-over and smoking car, the website said.

Apparently the driver skidded on wet roads, hit a ditch and flipped upside down, TMZ said.

Worried the vehicle might explode, Foxx reportedly unbuckled the driver and dragged the man about 30 feet away from the accident.

The actor already had called 911, so first responders arrived a short time later and transported the victim to a hospital with injuries, TMZ said.

Foxx currently is the subject of intense speculation that he's in a serious dating relationship with actress Katie Holmes.

Holmes, 37, is the ex-wife of Foxx's "Collateral" co-star Tom Cruise.

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale has suffered his third calf muscle injury of the season

Bale, 26, limped off shortly before half-time during Real's 5-1 La Liga win at home to Sporting Gijon on Sunday.
The Wales international, who has scored 13 goals in Spain this season, is reportedly set to be out for three weeks.
"He has been diagnosed with a soleus (calf) muscle injury in his right leg," Real said on their website.
"His recovery will continue to be assessed."
Reports in Spain suggest Real are hoping to have Bale back for the last-16 Champions League tie against Roma on 17 February.
Bale has missed eight games over two separate spells this season because of calf injuries.
He was criticised in the Spanish media after suffering a recurrence of the original while playing for Wales against Andorra in October.
Since returning to fitness at the beginning of November, he has scored 11 goals in as many games for Real.

Alert:Serial killer known as 'The Pusher' has killed at least 60

                  CHRISTOPHER FURLONG/GETTY IMAGES

A general view of Canal St. in the city of Manchester.

A serial killer known as "The Pusher" is terrorizing a British city and has taken more than 60 lives, some people claim.

Family members and experts say dozens of men have been pushed into canals in Manchester, but cops say there is no evidence of foul play. A documentary airing on Britain's Channel 4 on Tuesday night is set to examine the deaths more closely and add fuel to the debate.

There were 61 bodies found in local canals between 2008 and 2015, according to a Freedom of Information request, the Mirror reported.

“It is unlikely that such a high number of cases are the result of just accidents or suicides as canals are not popular suicide spots, especially for men," Professor Craig Jackson of Birmingham City University said, according to the British newspaper.

However, Jackson withdrew his comments after meeting with Manchester authorities, according to the Mirror.

Many family members believe that a serial killer is on the loose, or that foul play is involved.

"It needs to be investigated to find out if there is really a serial killer in this case," dad Santanu Pal said in the documentary, according to the Mirror. "There must be involvement of a third party. That could be a straight case or that could be a serial killer."

The body of his 18-year-old son, Souvik, was found in the Bridgewater Canal in January of 2013, three weeks after he was booted from a New Year’s Eve party, the Mirror reported. Souvik was seen walking with an unidentified man, and surveillance footage showed them crossing a canal bridge. One of them attempted to climb a railing and only one of the them returned, according to the Mirror.

“Despite extensive investigation it can not be ascertained where or how he entered the water," coroner Joanne Kearsley said, the Mirror reported.

The parents of another possible victim, 21-year-old David Plunkett, heard "screaming and howling" in their last phone call with their son, according to the paper.

"Something had terrified him," dad Michael said, the Mirror reported. "He was on the phone but our son could not speak to us. And that’s not because he was drunk."

The mother of 21-year-old Nathan Tomlinson said her son's coat, phone, passport and wallet were missing when his body was found early in 2013, according to the newspaper.

"I have always thought Nathan's death was suspicious," she said. "There were a lot of flaws in the investigation and the police were slow at the start."

An author believes that a serial killer is targeting gay men, or men the killer believes are gay. Thomas Sheridan claims he was followed by "a tall man wearing a hood" while investigating the deaths, according to the paper.

"I'm convinced foul play is a point concerning some of the bodies," he said, according to the paper. "I concur with the people of Manchester that 'The Pusher' is almost certainly the cause of some of these deaths."

Cops dispute the notion that foul play was involved. Detective Chief Inspector Pete Marsh said some died from alcohol, while others committed suicide, according to the paper.

“Down near Canal St. it is mainly young men and a lot of them are drunk late into the evening," Marsh said, according to the paper. "There are meeting places and the side of the canals. Drink and water don’t mix. Those individuals may be putting themselves more at risk. There is nothing that links any of these deaths."

“If a serial killer decided to cause their deaths by pushing them into the water, how could that person guarantee they would die?" Ex-Derbyshire Detective Chief Superintendent Tony Blockley said, according to the paper.

We've Driven Boko Haram into Fall-Back Positions - President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari said Monday in Abu Dhabi that Nigeria has made very significant progress towards ending the Boko Haram insurgency since his assumption of office on May 29 last year.

Speaking at a meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki Moon on the sidelines of the World Future Energy Summit, President Buhari said that in collaboration with the Multinational Joint Task Force, the Nigerian Armed Forces have driven the terrorist group from Nigerian territory into "fall-back positions".

"They are currently not holding any territory today as we speak, " the President told Mr. Ban Ki Moon.

President Buhari also told the United Nations Secretary-General that Nigeria will persistently pursue global action to reverse the drying up of Lake Chad and save the lives of those who depend on it for survival.

"With all due respect to our neighbours, Nigeria has been worst hit by the drying up of the Lake Chad and we are hoping that the global community will support the process of halting the drying up of the lake, " President Buhari said.

Mr. Ban Ki Moon commended the President for his courage in fighting terrorism and corruption.

The Secretary-General said that Nigeria has made amazing progress against terrorism since President Buhari assumed office, while the President's war against corruption has boosted global confidence in the Nigerian economy.

He urged President Buhari to integrate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into Nigeria's economic and environmental vision.

British minister furious after discovering porn movie filmed on church grounds

                                         CATERS NEWS AGENCY
A British minister has slammed a porn company who filmed an explicit movie on the grounds of his church.

Rev. Paul Tullett was outraged after discovering website PornXN had filmed on church grounds without permission.

Tullett, vicar at St. Peter and St. Paul Church in Water Orton in Warwickshire, England, said a local had alerted him to the shocking video, according to Mirror Online.

The X-rated movie shows porn star Lyen Parker dancing in front of the church sign, before crouching down and urinating on the ground near graves.

"The church is visited on a regular basis by mums and dads who've lost their children — and to think this sacred space, so treasured and valued, has been abused and used for something so inappropriate is shameful and upsetting,” said Rev. Tullett.

"It's a public space, so I don't think they've broken any rules or laws by filming on the grounds — although I think her acts were certainly illegal, her presence wasn't."

Rev. Tullett said the production crew had gained access as there was no way to secure the grounds of the 137-year-old church, and that he was disgusted by their behavior.

In the film, the narrator explains, "At the moment we are in this churchyard, which is pretty naughty. There's people going past. We'll quickly run away before we get any vicars running after us, trying to shout at us."

Academy Awards: President announces 'dramatic steps' to membership in wake of Oscars diversity scandal

PHIL MCCARTEN/REUTERS

Isaacs said in her statement that she was "heartbroken and frustrated" about the lack of diversity reflected among the 2016 Oscar nominees.

Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs has issued a statement for the second time in two years promising to address the lack of diversity among the major Oscar nominees.

"I’d like to acknowledge the wonderful work of this year’s nominees. While we celebrate their extraordinary achievements, I am both heartbroken and frustrated about the lack of inclusion,” she said in statement issued Monday evening.

“This is a difficult but important conversation, and it’s time for big changes. The Academy is taking dramatic steps to alter the makeup of our membership.

In the coming days and weeks we will conduct a review of our membership recruitment in order to bring about much-needed diversity in our 2016 class and beyond."

"As many of you know, we have implemented changes to diversify our membership in the last four years,” she continued. “But the change is not coming as fast as we would like. We need to do more, and better and more quickly."

In her statement, Boone also noted that this push for diversity "isn’t unprecedented for the Academy.”

"In the ‘60s and ‘70s it was about recruiting younger members to stay vital and relevant. In 2016, the mandate is inclusion in all of its facets: gender, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation.

“We recognize the very real concerns of our community, and I so appreciate all of you who have reached out to me in our effort to move forward together."

Isaace’s statement comes just one year after she addressed the lack of diversity among the major nominees, with the lack of nods for "Selma" director Ava DuVernay and lead actor David Oyelowo despite the film's Best Picture nomination receiving particular ire.

In response to the firestorm, Isaac said at the time that the Academy was"committed to seeking out diversity of voice and opinion" among its' nearly 7,000 members.

Yet the promised changes didn't come soon enough. Soon after the 2016 Academy Award nominations were announced Jan. 14, the #OscarsSoWhitehashtag, which was created last year in response to the non-diverse nominations, trended again on social media.

The growing backlash has also led Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee to announce they are boycotting the Feb. 28 ceremony, with this year's host, Chris Rock, also facing pressure to bow out of emceeing the Oscars as part of the boycott.

The Eagles' Glenn Frey dead at 67

Glenn Frey

Glenn Frey, a founding member of the rock band the Eagles, has died at 67, a publicist for the band has confirmed.
"Glenn fought a courageous battle for the past several weeks but, sadly, succumbed to complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia," reads a post on the band's official website.
Frey had been suffering from intestinal issues, which caused the postponement of the band's inclusion in the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors.
Frey and the other original members of the Eagles — Don Henley, Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon -- came together to form singer Linda Ronstadt's backup band in the early 1970s.
They were all experienced musicians who forged a laid-back, country-tinged sound that the Eagles would eventually make famous.
"We are all in a state of shock, disbelief and profound sorrow," Henley said in a statement Monday. "I'm not sure I believe in fate, but I know that crossing paths with Glenn Lewis Frey in 1970 changed my life forever, and it eventually had an impact on the lives of millions of other people all over the planet.
"It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it," Henley added. "But, I will be grateful, every day, that he was in my life. Rest in peace, my brother. You did what you set out to do, and then some."
Throughout the early- to mid-1970s, Frey and the band released hit after hit, leading a renaissance of mellow California singer-songwriters with such artists as Ronstadt and Jackson Browne.
Frey and Henley co-wrote many of the band's biggest songs, including "Best of My Love," "Lyin' Eyes," "One of These Nights" and "Hotel California." Frey also famously helped Browne finish writing the Eagles' first hit, "Take It Easy," contributing the catchy verse, "it's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford / slowing down to take a look at me."
Frey played guitar and keyboard and took lead vocal duties for the band on tunes like "Take it Easy" and "Tequila Sunrise."
With "Hotel California" in 1976, the band reached the pinnacle of its success, selling 16 million copies. They released four number one albums consecutively between 1975 and 1979: "One of These Nights," "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975," "Hotel California" and "The Long Run."
"Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975," was the first album certified platinum and has sold 29 million copies in the United States, second only to Michael Jackson's "Thriller," according to Rolling Stone.
The Eagles have sold more than 100 million records worldwide and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. But while public reception was warm, the band had a prickly relationship with many critics.
"Another thing that interests me about the Eagles is that I hate them," wrote rock critic Robert Christgau in 1972, when they first hit it big.
The band succumbed to internal squabbles and broke up in 1980. Frey, Henley and other band members were famously contentious.
With his pop sensibilities and gift for melody, Frey was an ideal songwriting counterbalance to Henley's seriousness and penchant for weighty social statements.
"He was like a brother to me," Henley went on to say Monday. "We were family, and like most families, there was some dysfunction. But, the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken, even during the 14 years that the Eagles were dissolved."
Frey saw solo success with the 1982 release "No Fun Aloud." He hit the top 40 with "The Heat Is On," "You Belong to the City," "True Love," and "Soul Searchin.'"
He also tried his hand at acting with a guest spot on "Miami Vice" and a small role in the 1996 film "Jerry Maguire," among other credits.
The Eagles reunited for 1994's Hell Freezes Over tour, which spawned an MTV special and a live album. They would continue to tour together over the years.
"Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide," the band said on its website Monday.

FG to leverage on the existing structures of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) for 'Change Begins With Me' Campaign

The Honourable Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the plan while receiving the Acting Post Master General of the Federation, Mr. Enoch Adeogun, in his office in Abuja on Monday, saying the outlets of NIPOST across the country remained veritable platforms for the 'Change Begins With Me' Campaign of the Federal Government.

"Very soon we are going to start our re-orientation campaign. This is a campaign in which we are going to tell Nigerians about the change we promised. The fact is that the change we promised will only happen if we all change the ways and manners we do things and this is why your tele-centres become useful to us. This is where your postal agencies and post offices become useful to us. We will apply to you to please allow us to brand some of your post offices and postal agencies so that the people who come to the post offices will see exactly what the change is all about.

"We are going to have very impressive outdoor images preaching change and, if for instance I have 3,000 locations in Nigeria where I can brand the Change Mantra, it means that everyday when people are going to the post offices or postal agencies, they will learn about the Change Mantra.

"I have also looked at how it is possible to use your 3,000 post outlets as information centres to disseminate government programmes and policies to our people and, in this respect, I would want the National Orientation Agency to work closely with NIPOST,'' he said.

Alhaji Mohammed therefore implored the NIPOST to explore technology to boost the safety and integrity of the documents and parcels entrusted in their care in order to inspire public confidence and place NIPOST on equal pedestal with the private courier service companies.

The Minister harped on the need to enforce the laws concerning the use of the services of NIPOST in the delivery of certain items that were exclusively reserved for it in order to boost its activities and make it possible for it to create more jobs.

He observed that though the advent of technology had posed a huge challenge to NIPOST services, it was incumbent on the organization to adapt and explore Information and Communication Technology to add value to its services as obtained in other parts of the world.

"We are not the only country where technology has come to enhance services. In Britain, the post office still remains one of the largest employers of labour today. So I don't know why this cannot happen in Nigeria,'' the Minister remarked.

Earlier, the Acting Post Master General had told the Minister that NIPOST, with over 3,000 outlets, had embraced technology to boost its activities through the establishment of tele-centres and the remodeling of some of its offices across the country.

He said in the last four years, NIPOST had remodeled about 300 post offices and had also entered into partnership with Galaxy Backbone to install 1,500 VSAT in the post offices.

Mr. Adeogun, however, noted that in spite of the reach and efficiency of communication through the telephone and the Internet, physical delivery of parcels at affordable cost, especially in reserved areas, was crucial to the economy.

He reminded the public that any parcel less than 500 grams was statutorily reserved for delivery by NIPOST and not through the private courier services.

Celebrities to boycott Oscars ceremony over race issue

Invoking the Rev. Martin Luther King's legacy on his birthday, two prominent African-Americans announced Monday that they will boycott this year's Academy Awards over a lack of diversity among nominees.

Filmmaker Spike Lee and actress Jada Pinkett Smith posted separate messages Monday saying they would not be attending the February 28 ceremony. The Oscars have drawn criticism after an all-white slate of major nominees was announced Thursday for the second year in a row.

"We cannot support it and [I] mean no disrespect ... But, how is it possible for the second consecutive year all 20 contenders under the acting category are white? And let's not even get into the other branches," Lee wrote on Instagram. "Forty white actors in two years and no flava at all. We can't act?! WTF!!"

"Dr. King said, 'There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it's right,' " continued Lee, the outspoken director of such racially charged films as "Do the Right Thing" and "Malcolm X."
Lee said the " 'real' battle" over racism in Hollywood is not with the Academy Awards but in "the executive offices of the Hollywood studios and TV and cable networks," where gatekeepers decide which projects get made and which don't.
"People, the truth is we ain't in those rooms, and until minorities are, the Oscar nominees will remain lilly white," he wrote.
In a video posted to Facebook, Pinkett Smith said she would not even watch the Oscars on TV this year. Her husband, Will Smith, had been considered an Oscar contender for his role in "Concussion" but was not nominated.
"Today is Martin Luther King's birthday, and I can't help but ask the question: Is it time that people of color recognize how much power, influence, that we have amassed, that we no longer need to ask to be invited anywhere?" she said.
"Begging for acknowledgement, or even asking, diminishes dignity and diminishes power. And we are a dignified people, and we are powerful," she said. "So let's let the Academy do them, with all grace and love. And let's do us, differently."
#OscarsSoWhite trended on social media last week after a number of black Oscar hopefuls, including "Beasts of No Nation's" Idris Elba; "Creed" star Michael B. Jordan; that movie's writer-director, Ryan Coogler; and the cast of N.W.A biopic "Straight Outta Compton" were overlooked by academy voters.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has faced years of criticism that its 7,000-plus members who vote on the Oscars are mostly older, male, white and out of touch with today's moviegoers.
Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, who is black, said over the weekend that she was "disappointed" by the Oscar nominations.
"But this is not to take away the greatness" of the nominated films, she told Deadline. "This has been a great year in film, it really has, across the board. You are never going to know what is going to appear on the sheet of paper until you see it."
Still, Isaacs acknowledged that the academy's efforts at boosting diversity among its membership and throughout Hollywood were moving too slowly. "We have got to speed it up," she said.
A longtime critic of the academy, Lee received an honorary Oscar at a banquet in Hollywood in November, where he said, "This industry is so far behind sports, it's ridiculous. It's easier to be president of the United States as a black person than be head of a (movie) studio. Honest."
Next month's 88th Academy Awards will be hosted by black actor-comedian Chris Rock, who has largely remained quiet about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. Friday on Twitter, however, Rock referred to the show as "the white BET Awards."

Man stabs friend to death with Civil War sword during mobile home brawl

      MONROE COUNTY SHERIFF

Stanley Pace reportedly stabbed to death his friend with a replica Civil War sword.

'Doga' world record set in Hong Kong

Even though, this isn't the Year of the Dog, but a new world record for the biggest dog-yoga class was set in Hong Kong on Sunday. And 270 dog-and-owner pairs participated. It's called "doga" and led by doga-teacher, Suzette Ackerman.

For over half an hour, the participants massaged, twisted, and stretched their furry friends in a series of poses. "Doga" is hailed as a great way to bond and relax with your pets, especially amid big-city pressures. Owners said they were honored to be part of a new world record attempt and want to continue their "doga" disciplines.
As for the dogs, it's a great opportunity to hang out with other members of the species. The record-breaking attempt has yet to be confirmed by Guinness World Records, but organizers are confident they have satisfied the requirements. The previous record was set in San Diego about a year ago with 265 dog-and-owner pairs. All proceeds from the Hong Kong event are going to the Hong Kong Guide Dog Association.

21-year-old freezes to death after going to concert with friends

                                    KANA KANE VIA FACEBOOK

A young woman who went to Milwaukee for a concert froze to death after leaving her friends and walking out into the subzero cold.

Elizabeth Luebke, a 21-year-old from Oshkosh, was seen on surveillance cameras collapsing in the snow around 4:30 a.m. near the house she left after an argument Saturday night.

Dressed only in shorts, stockings and a tank top, Luebke succumbed to the night’s frigid temperature, which were still hovering around six degrees below zero when she was found by a passerby at 9 a.m.

Wind chills dropped down to nearly minus 30.

Friends at the small party thought she had been picked up, and didn’t suspect that Luebke was fighting for her life in the snow nearby.

The man whose home she left told Fox 6 that the concert-goer had been drunk before storming out when she got mad at a friend.

Luebke’s mother, who drove to Milwaukee to file a missing person’s report for her daughter, said that she was hospitalized with five times the blood alcohol limit to legally drive last October.

In December the young woman posted on social media that she had quit drinking and stayed sober for a month.

Police in Milwaukee urged residents to stick together in groups while venturing into possibly dangerous conditions.

"I know you kids feel invincible, but this weather is ruthless. Please, all of you, don't underestimate this cold,'  Luebke's friend Julie Schmidt posted on Facebook.

In eight years 55 people stole a total of 1.34 trillion Naira in Nigeria

      Alhaji Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government has appealed to the media to join hands with it in sensitizing Nigerians to the damage that corruption has done to the nation, warning that unless Nigeria kills corruption, the vice is capable of killing Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made the appeal on Monday while kick-starting the National Sensitization Campaign Against Corruption at a press conference in Abuja.

To ensure the success of the campaign, the Minister urged the media to replicate the support they are giving to the Federal Government in its ongoing National Security Awareness Campaign

''Thanks to the support we have received from the media, especially in this (National Security) Sensitization Campaign, I can now tell you that Nigerians have taken ownership of the war against terrorism and are also giving their undiluted support to our gallant military. I commend the media for heeding our patriotic call to duty at a critical time in the life of our nation."

''Gentlemen, we are here today because of another patriotic call to duty. We want the media to once again lead the campaign to sensitize Nigerians to take possession of another war - the war against corruption,'' he said.

Alhaji Mohammed stressed the need to change the narrative on corruption, especially what he described as the wrong impression out there that the war against corruption is being fought only by the President or the Federal Government or the governing All Progressive Congress (APC), or the orchestrated misinformation that the war against corruption is a vendetta against the opposition, and that indeed it is one-sided.

The Minister said Nigerians must be made to know the damage that corruption ''has done to our nation, our people and our international image, how corruption stifles economic growth, hinders the fight against poverty, leads to decay in infrastructure and reduces educational standards, lowers life expectancy, stunts the fight against maternal and infant mortality and impacts negatively on the general livelihood of the citizens. No one is better placed than you, the media, to lead this charge.''

Alhaji Mohammed said, for example, that between 2006 and 2013, just 55 people allegedly stole a total of 1.34 trillion Naira in Nigeria, an amount that is more than a quarter of the 2015 national budget!

''Out of the stolen funds, 15 former Governors allegedly stole 146.84 billion naira; 4 former Ministers allegedly stole 7 billion naira; 12 former Public Servants, both at federal and state levels, allegedly stole over 14 billion Naira; 8 people in the Banking Industry allegedly stole 524 billion Naira; while 11 businessmen allegedly stole 653 billion naira."

''Using World Bank Rates and Costs, one third of the stolen funds could have provided 635.18 kilometres of road; built 36 ultra modern hospitals, that is one ultra modern hospital per state; built 183 schools; educated 3,974 children from primary to tertiary level at 25.24 million per child; and built 20,062 units of 2-bedroom houses. This is the money that a few people, just 55 in number, allegedly stole within a period of just eight years. And instead of a national outrage, all we hear are these nonsensical statements that the Government is fighting only the opposition, or that the government is engaging in vendetta,'' he said.

Commenting on the issue of the 2.1 billion-dollar arms deal, the Minister said irrespective of what anyone might say, there is no doubt that funds meant to fight terrorism were deployed to another 'fight', the fight to keep then President Goodluck Jonathan and his party, the PDP, in power at all cost.

''So far, based on what we know, no one who has been accused of partaking in the sharing of the funds has denied receiving money. All we have heard from them are ludicrous reasons why they partook in sharing of the money. One said he collected 4.5 billion Naira for spiritual purposes, another said he received 2.1 billion naira for publicity, while yet another said he got 13 billion Naira to pay someone else for the Maritime University land."

''Based on these revelations, should we now fold our hands and allow these people to go away with public funds? Is anyone thinking about the innocent soldiers who lost their lives just because they did not get the necessary weapons to fight the terrorists? What about the families left behind by these soldiers who were sent to their early graves because of the misappropriation of these funds? What about those who lost their means of livelihood after the terrorists overran their towns and villages? What of the millions of Nigerians, especially women and children, who are now living in IDP camps? Is it not clear that the cruel fate that has befallen these unfortunate people is a direct result of the misuse of the funds meant to fight the terrorists?" he queried.

Alhaji Mohammed said irrespective of political, religious or tribal leanings, and not minding whether anyone belongs to the APC, PDP, SDP or Labour Party, ''if you have stolen public funds, you must not go scot-free''.

He urged all Nigerians and every arm of government to ''rise up and be counted in this epic war, and defeat is not an option if our country is to survive. As President Muhammadu Buhari likes to say, if we don't kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria. There is no better way to say it''.

The Minister said President Buhari is leading this fight by example and right from the front, adding: ''His unparalleled integrity, his uncommon love of country and his undiluted dedication to service all put him in good stead to wage this war, and we must all support him and own the war in order to ensure its success. This is not Buhari's war. This is not APC's war. This is Nigeria's war.''

He also appealed to the Judiciary, which he said is critical to the success of the war, saying unless everyone in the judiciary fully joins in waging this war, the pending cases of corruption will just drag on until they outlast this Administration.
