Manchester United fans call for Louis van Gaal to be sacked

Southampton's new £4m signing Charlie Austin took just seven minutes after coming off the bench to score a late winner and pile the pressure on beleaguered Louis van Gaal as Manchester United once more crashed to ignominious defeat.
His 87th-minute header left United with just 37 points after 23 games, their lowest total in the Premier League era, and three fewer than David Moyes had at the same stage during his season in charge.
They have now won only two of their last ten league matches, and they have failed to score in eight league matches this season.
When asked whether he feared for his job after yet another cowed, nervy, uninspired showing by his side, Van Gaal, replied: "I cannot answer that.
“I don’t know, but it was a poor performance, of course, because football is not only defending but creating chances and we didn’t create any chance.”
It was not so much the defeat as the manner of it that dismayed the home support, and the match was played to a gathering soundtrack of anger in the stands, with a chorus of boos ringing the ears of Van Gaal and his players as they left the pitch.
“It was a poor game for the fans,” admitted Van Gaal. “I cannot change feelings, only work hard with the players. That is what I am doing. I put a question: how can we change this? That is my job. It is not an easy job.”
Adding that he thought United’s players may have been put off their stride by the sight of the fullback Matteo Darmian spitting blood after sustaining a rib injury, Van Gaal expressed his own frustration at his side’s inability to seize on the momentum of victory at Anfield last week.
“That’s the question,” he said. “When you have these results it has to give you more confidence. But also your opponent makes it more difficult, but I had the impression we could have done it better today.”

Liverpool claim dramatic Norwich win

A shirtless Adam Lallana celebrates with teammates and manager Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool claim a dramatic 5-4 victory at Norwich City.
When the dust settled at Carrow Road there had been end-to-end drama, calamitous defending and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had broken his glasses celebrating an incredible 5-4 victory over Norwich City that had seemed impossible only moments before.
The charismatic German coach looked agitated on the sidelines as Norwich leveled the scores at 4-4 going into injury time through a long range effort from Sebastien Bassong.
But Adam Lallana's 95th minute strike put Liverpool back in front and ensured the points would be heading back to Merseyside.
Cue the exuberant celebrations that saw Klopp's glasses knocked from his face as joyous Liverpool players piled on top of their boss.
"I usually have a second pair of glasses, but I can't find them because it's hard to find glasses without glasses" Klopp joked with reporters afterwards.
"Of course we were lucky," Klopp added of the nature of the victory. "But we were not too lucky when they equalized in overtime."
Roberto Firmino had put Liverpool ahead early on before a slick back-heel finish from Dieumerci Mbokani, a debut goal from new signing Steven Naismith and a coolly taken penalty from Wes Hoolahan at the start of the second period put Norwich firmly in command.
But Liverpool fought back and another strike from Firmino, sandwiched in between tidy finishes from Jordan Henderson and James Milner, put Liverpool back in control as 90 minutes approached.
"It is very emotional. We are in the middle of the chaos and react. Sometimes we know what we are doing, sometimes we don't," Klopp said of the crazy final few moments and his side's celebrations.
"The game (itself) is enough of a story," he added
Norwich manager, Alex Neil, was understandably experiencing emotions at the other end of the scale.
"It is really frustrating. We worked really hard this week and we put in a good performance, but made it a bit of a rabble with our defending," Neil said.
The result means Norwich remain just two points above the relegation zone.
For Liverpool it was the perfect fillip after succumbing to arch rivals Manchester United last weekend and moves them into seventh position.

FBI probes Germany over 2006 World Cup payment

German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) reports that the FBI has opened a corruption investigation into the awarding of the 2006 World Cup to Germany.
SZ said it was told by "sources close to FIFA" that the FBI was concerned about a suspect payment made by the German football federation to FIFA before the tournament was awarded.
The DFB said the money was a loan of 10 million Swiss francs - the equivalent of $7.22m - from then-Adidas boss Robert Louis-Dreyfus to FIFA in 2002 to obtain a large grant for the World Cup organising committee.
It is unclear who exactly received the money, however.
The payment is also the target of a tax evasion investigation by German and Swiss authorities.

The re-branding project of PDP aimed at repositioning the party to regain power by 2019

    A report released and signed by the National Secretary of People Democratic Party, Prof. Adewale Oladipo, stated that the National Working Committee (NWC), State Chairmen and Zonal Vice Chairmen of the party rose from a meeting at the party’ National Secretariat in Abuja, Thursday, January 21, 2016 and resolved;

"To charge all its members to remain committed to the stability, rebuilding and development of the party."

"That the PDP still remains the only true national political party, well-equipped to nurture and sustain national unity and cohesion, irrespective of religion, class or creed."

"That all organs of the party nation-wide should be galvanized towards the re-branding project of PDP aimed at repositioning the party to regain power by 2019."

The meeting urged all organs of the party to continue to sensitize party members across the country on the rebuilding efforts as well as laid-out programmes, which would culminate in the summoning of the party’s caucus next week, and thereafter the meetings of the Board of Trustees, (BoT) and the National Executive Committee (NEC) to approve the draft guideline for our Congresses and the National Convention.

Oscar controversy: Michael Caine says black actors should ‘be patient’

The British actor didn’t hold back when asked to weigh in on the ongoing debate about a call for diversity in Hollywood, after no people of color were nominated for Oscars in acting categories for the second year in a row.

"There's loads of black actors. You can't vote for an actor because he's black,” said Caine, 82, in a BBC Radio 4 interview when asked about the issue.

“You got to give a good performance, and I'm sure there were very good (performances)."

Caine, a two-time Oscar winner and four-time nominee, also advised that black actors simply “be patient” about getting Academy Award recognition, using himself as an example.

"Be patient ... of course, it will come. It took me years to get an Oscar," said Caine, who won his first Oscar in 1987 for his supporting role in “Hannah and Her Sisters.”

Caine’s comments come just as fellow British actor Charlotte Rampling, one of this year’s nominees in the best actress category, received backlash for dismissing the #OscarsSoWhite movement as “racists to whites.”

Caine’s comments come just as fellow British actor Charlotte Rampling, one of this year’s nominees in the best actress category, received backlash for dismissing the #OscarsSoWhite movement as “racists to whites.”

And in the wake of the mounting controversy, the Academy pledged “historic reforms" Friday, including promising to double its number of female and minority members by 2020.

Nigerian Comedienne and Wazobia FM On-Air-Personality, Omotunde Adebowale, popularly known as Lolo1, has called out her fellow female comedienne, Princess, on Instagram over her attitude and behaviour on stage.
Lolo1 said Princess’ attitude on stage is downright rude and absolutely ridiculous.
On her Instagram page @officiallolo1, the OAP wrote, “Good morning guys! I have some things I’ve always wanted to get off my mind.
“I totally respect and have absolute faith in the growth of the “Stand Up” comedy industry in Nigeria but I think Females in this industry have a whole lot of work to do.
“We’re strong, we are beautiful and we are talented but unfortunately some have allowed “pettiness” “rudeness” and downright classlessness, override whatever form of talent they have.
“I’m usually not one to call people out, (especially my colleagues) but at this point; someone needs to talk to PRINCESS the ‘comedian’.
“Madam, what you do on stage is no longer comedy. You’re still acting after the audience has gone.
“Your attitude, downright rudeness and absolute ridiculousness on stage are an embarrassment to female comedians.
“As a so called veteran, you of all people should know that when the joke is no longer funny, it’s time to exit the stage.

“Either way, stop embarrassing us,” Lolo1 penned down.

Vice President Osinbajo Explains FG’s Economic Plan

Prof. Osinbajo said that a special protection programme aimed at addressing unemployment will be implemented, according to Channel Television.

The government has emphasized the importance of mobilizing domestic revenue to enable significant spending on social investment to the extent that 10% of the budget is going to be used for social protection programmes.

These will include training for 500,000 teachers, micro-credit scheme for 300,000 market women and several other youth empowerment programmes.

“Our youth employment is very crucial. We think that for graduate employment, the direct creation of jobs – the 500,000 teachers – will address some of that concern but for those who are not graduates, we are looking at investing in that also substantially, told Channel.

“How we intend to do that is by this youth employment scheme,” he said.

Investment in infrastructural development has also been identified as a key component to economic growth and our correspondent sought to know what kind of attention the Federal Government was paying to this.

Prof Osinbajo said, “That’s why we are spending so much money on infrastructure and that’s power. We are going to spend a lot of money on power. If you look at our whole capital spend in this (2016) budget, it is directed at ensuring that we are able to improve the economy significantly.”

With the country’s revenue profile taking a hit because of the dependence on oil, the VP said that one of the critical sectors for Nigeria is the agro-allied value chain which the Buhari administration wants to also improve significantly.

“If you look at rice for example, we are looking at milling and how we can ensure that there is more investment in silos storage and also in milling.
“It is important to us that Agriculture is not a government business and what is crucial is that we create an environment and bring in private partnership.”

Prof. Osinbajo also stressed that the cash transfer promised during the campaign of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was meant for the poorest in the society and not for the unemployed people, as popularly believed.

Super Sunday: Walcott, Willian Expect Tough Arsenal vs. Chelsea Clash

Chelsea midfielder, Willian believes his team has improved in the last few games and Arsenal’s Theo Walcott admitted that indeed, they would face a “completely different” Chelsea during the weekend, according to Channel sport.
“It is going to be a completely different team we face. They will be up for the challenge,” Walcott said, admitting also that Chelsea remains a threat to Arsenal’s title chances as they are likely to face another big battle on Sunday.
“They are always a threat. They have got top-quality players, even though some of them are not playing to the standards they set last year but in these games, nobody can call it,” Theo said.
Willian Borges da Silva, while describing the improvement in their squad, expressed belief that Chelsea is capable of winning the game at the Emirates.
He said; “Arsenal have a great team, we know that, but we know we can do it and bring back three points to Stamford Bridge”.
The Brazilian warned that he would also be out to score against his former Chelsea teammate and now Arsenal goalkeeper, Petr Cech.

Body of kidnaped Delta monarch found in the bush

The body of the Obi of Ubulu-Uku, Edward Akaeze Ofolue III, has been found in a bush at Umunede between the boundary of Delta and Edo states, according to Vanguard.

The traditional ruler was kidnapped on January 5 together with a friend while traveling in an SUV which was later abandoned in a bush around Igbodo.

The friend of the monarch was said to have later escaped from their abductors, while police had mounted surveillance since then to rescue the Obi.

Tribune Online gathered that efforts of the police detectives were complemented by vigilance groups and local hunters to rescue the abducted monarch but to no avail.

Meanwhile, on January 20, passersby, who discovered two decomposing male bodies along the bush at Umunede, were said to have informed the DPO, Umunede Division on the development.

The information, it was gathered, led to the recovery of the two decomposing male corpses one of which was discovered by family members to be that of the abducted monarch.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the discovery of the corpses, commiserated with families of the deceased as well as people of Ubulu-Uku.

Kalu assured the people that the police would do all it could to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book in due course

Fight Against Corruption:Those who diverted money from Jonathan will die — Ibu

    John Okafor (Mr. Ibu)

    John Okafor (Mr. Ibu)

Nollywood star actor and comedian,John Okafor, popularly known as,Mr. Ibu, in this interview expresses his reservations on the efficacy of the current   anti-corruption war even as he revealed that Enugu State has abundant latent Nollywood potentials yet untapped, according to Vanguard.

The picture I foresee for the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN,in 2016 is big. But,there is a clause. The clause there is that we should stop attacking each other. If we stop attacking each other by going to court and police every minute including washing our dirty leaning in the public, we will go far. AGN is one all over the world. Our own should not be an exception. Good administration has eluded us for so long now. We do not have people that can pilot the affairs of the AGN, told Vanguard.

"Now, I sent a proposal for Film Village to the Federal Government. Only God in Haven knows weather it has gotten to the designated point or not. The same thing was sent in to the government of Enugu State. We are conducting a poll   to ascertain where will be most suitable for citing a Film Village. Enugu State scored 83%. It means that if ever we are going to have a film village, Enugu State is the most suitable nationwide. Second to Enugu is Lagos, with 53% then Owerri, Asaba, 38%,34% respectively. That is why if you watch most Nollywood films, there locations are shot in Enugu."

"So we have more advantage than any other place. We are looking forward to having that film village in Enugu. It is very important. Let government make us responsible rather than looking beggarly, going to government houses and so on. I promised myself that I will never be part of the people going to government houses seeking   alms. Our people should stop piling themselves in government houses. When ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was in office, every minute they were there asking for all maner of favour. And the ex-President loved us so much that he gave them huge money.   All those who diverted monies meant for AGN or Movie Makers will die because they do not know the souls they have killed. For 2016,if all these things are taken care of, AGN will do better. I am promising one thing, am not contesting anything on the AGN but, I have a lot of surprises."

"A woman working with me has sent in the proposal. The federal or state government might not spend much because we will go ahead and get sponsors. They will come and build a five-star hotel with a big gate carrying a neon sign,AGN. All the things one may need from all accredited members of AGN will be there. We will be resident inside the village. People will come in,shoot pictures, shoot musicals among others. I have all these things inside. I equally have friend who are not Nigerians willing to come and invest."

When asked about the fight against corruption, he said  it is too early to fight this. I would have preferred the government to set their house in order first. Set the administration going, make the people who voted you talk good of you as you are coming in. The corrupt people know themselves. While your good work is going on,you can then start picking them one after the other. Whoever that has offended government knows he or she has done so.

"Government should set its house in order first. Let the good things about this administration flow first before the arrests. Let Nigerians talk good of you first, then you can now tell them, there are people who did this and that, that need questioning. But starting with this quarrel, fighting as a new government,I do not think it will help. Many people are talking about hunger,no money, collapsed businesses among others. They would have first of all laid good foundation about their administration so that people will feel them first. The change should be seen in the peoples’ welfare and every other thing will follow. That’s my own idea."

He said, films are a reflection of the society when asked about Nollywood films tilt towards, ritual and affluence that are perceived as lacking morals.
"Nobody believes he is a poor person in Nigeria. We are trying to give proper interpretation of what is happening in the society. Films give back the life in the society. But,already,we have held a meeting that all things should go and give way for films dwelling on family, tragic, comedy stories. The issue is that the ritual thing can’t even go in the society. My father for instance, was poisoned to death by his best friend. I was small then.   When my father died,he told my mother in a dream about three weeks after, that it was his best friend that killed him. In that dream,my father told my mother, invite the man who killed me but nobody should hurt him."

"My father equally instructed my mum to invite my brothers and relations inside our compound. Tell them what I said. My mother invited the man, as my father instructed  and other relatives. My fathers instruction was done exactly as it came. They told the man what my father said. He denied and they said okay, you will eat the yam roasted on my father’s grave. If you did not do it,you will go home, but if you did it,you will die here. The yam was roasted on my father’s grave in the presence of the man. All the elders in my village ate the yam and said the yam was sweat and that we did not put poison in the food roasted on father’s grave. Then came the turn of the man. The elders asked him to say that if he was responsible for the death of my father,Emmanuel Okafor, let this food be the last food he will eat."

"But if he did  not know anything about my father’s death, let his life span be increased. The man who killed my father refused to eat it. And remember,my father had warned us in the dream, that we should not touch him. When he refused, nobody touched him and he left. That is to tell you that the rituals we are shooting is real. But the new generations coming up,they are oblivious about these concoctions. That is why we shoot films to highlight these things so that people will know and shun such evil ways."

He laughs, when confronted with the question of "what happened to the money,ex-President Jonathan allegedly gave to the AGN as loan?"  I do not know who processed and collected it. If the money was released,I do not know. If they did not release it,I do not know. The people who were supposed to give us information, talking about the leadership of AGN, did not tell us anything even the first $200 million, nothing was heard of it. What am looking for is hectares of land for the Film Village, then I will leave acting.

DasukiGate: We won’t provide sureties for Metuh –Jalo

According to a report credited to Punch Newspaper, the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has said that it will not provide sureties for its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh.
The party said since Metuh was being prosecuted for offences that have nothing to do with it, its embattled spokesperson should look for those who would stand as sureties for him.
Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Alhaji Abdullahi Jalo, told our correspondent in an interview on Friday in Abuja that it would be wrong for anyone to be expecting the party to provide sureties for Metuh when the party did not benefit from the money he allegedly collected from the former National Security Adviser, Lt Col. Sabo Dasuki (retd.).
Metuh is facing charges for allegedly collecting N400m from Dasuki, an offence the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission described as money laundering.
Though Metuh said he actually collected the money, he said it was for a job he did for former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Metuh has, however, remained silent on the type of job he allegedly did for the former President.
He is also being prosecuted by the EFCC for allegedly tearing the statement he made to the commission while under interrogation.
The PDP spokesperson has denied both offences, and he is currently being remanded in Kuje Prisons, Abuja, by two different courts pending the time he would meet the bail conditions.
There were anxieties on how he would meet the conditions in order to ease his release from the prisons.
Jalo, however, said the party would not be involved in the search for the sureties.
He said, “Metuh didn’t represent the party in the alleged crimes he’s being prosecuted. The party didn’t benefit from the alleged crime.
“So, he is going to look for sureties himself. We won’t be involved. He would carry his own cross alone, without the party being involved.”
However, the National Legal Adviser of the party, Mr. Victor Kwon, said friends and associates Metuh were “doing everything possible to get the sureties” as demanded by the courts.
